Project Angel Wings is a Christian community service partnership between Second Church in Dorchester, The Boston Project Ministries, Boston Trinity Academy, and Park Street Church in Boston.
Together we are helping to re-beautify Codman Burying Ground, a historic cemetery on Norfolk Street in Dorchester that is owned by Second Church. At 3.77 acres, Codman Burying Ground is the largest tract of open space in the Codman Square section of Dorchester. The cemetery has suffered decades of neglect but remains a local treasure as a center of Codman Square history. The time is right for restoring it to its former place of honor and dignity, and in engaging the community in bringing it back to life.
About 200 years ago, Codman Burying Ground was creatively designed with walking paths that formed the shape of an angel (see the outline of its wings in the aerial photo rotating above). The grave of Reverend John Codman, senior pastor of Second Church from 1808 to 1847, lies at the head of the angel and the grave markers of many prominent Dorchester citizens from generations past form the angel's wings.
